This is a monthly council work session.

  • East Garner Middle School Rezoning (GZ-26-001): McAdams Co., on behalf of the Wake County Board of Education, is requesting to rezone 38.98 acres at 6301 Jones Sausage Rd. from Light Industrial (LI) to Residential 2 (R2).

  • TV Tower Rd Convenience Store Rezoning (CZ-MP-26-004): A request to conditionally rezone 2.60 acres at 4901 TV Tower Rd from Rural Agricultural (RA) to Commercial Mixed Use - Conditional (CMX-C) to build a convenience store with fuel sales (with conditions prohibiting standalone tobacco, CBD, or vapor shops).

  • Downtown Opportunity Site Development Agreement: Staff will present an overview of the Master Development Agreement for the downtown project adjacent to the Garner Recreation Center. The plan includes private conveyance of land to developer LMG, the construction of a $26.5M+ mixed-use project, and the Town purchasing and operating a $5M+ condominium parking garage.

  • Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) Updates (ZTA-26-003): Staff is requesting to set a September 15, 2026, public hearing to adopt a reformatted UDO source document that fixes codification errors, standardizes punctuation and cross-references, and establishes an updated versioning system.

  • Council Updates & Closed Session: Routine reports include the August 2026 Development Activity Map and September pending agenda, followed by a closed session to consult with the Town Attorney regarding legal claims or litigation.

Garner Fire-Rescue Awarded International Accreditation Status for Second Consecutive Time

The department received its accreditation during a CPSE hearing on Aug. 18 at the organization’s headquarters in Rosemont, Ill. Garner Fire-Rescue is among the fewer than 1 percent of fire departments worldwide to achieve international accreditation through CFAI and CPSE. 

“Achieving accreditation demonstrates our commitment to providing the highest quality of service to our community,” Garner Fire-Rescue Chief Barrett Penny said. “More important, it reflects the dedication of our members and our willingness as an organization to continuously evaluate ourselves.”
