Town of Garner Convenes Housing Advisory Committee Joint Session on October 8th

Town of Garner published notice for an upcoming meeting of the Garner Housing Advisory Committee, scheduled for Thursday, October 8, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Fire Department Administrative Conference Room at 914 7th Avenue. Issued in strict accordance with the North Carolina Open Meetings Act, the notice highlighted that a quorum of the Garner Town Council is expected to participate alongside committee members to evaluate town-wide housing affordability strategies.

Housing and Community Development Specialist, Lewis Hurd. Most recently, Mr. Hurd worked for the municipality of Princeton, N.J., where he served as the manager of affordable housing and executive director of the Princeton Housing Authority.

Facilitated by Housing and Community Development Specialist Lewis Hurd, the study session will examine municipal housing policies, capital incentives for attainable workforce housing, and ongoing regional partnerships with Wake County Housing Affordability & Community Revitalization. Committee members and elected leaders will evaluate ongoing data from the town's housing needs assessment, review construction progress at the 176-unit Tryon Station development on Creech Road, and deliberate on programmatic recommendations for the town's Affordable Housing Trust Fund.

Municipal officials noted that while no formal legislative votes will be taken during the informational session, the dialogue provides essential alignment between citizen advisory members and elected council officials as housing affordability pressures grow across southern Wake County. The meeting underscores Garner’s proactive, structured approach to preserving naturally occurring affordable housing, expanding homeownership pathways for municipal workers and first responders, and fostering balanced, inclusive neighborhood development.
