History Leads the Future of Downtown Garner: Historic Depot and Caboose Relocated

On December 14th 2019, Garner’s Historic Depot and Caboose were relocated from their homes along Garner Road to their new home on the corner of Main and Pearl to become the centerpieces of a new Garner History Museum.

The Historic Depot and Caboose were both placed on remote-controlled casters for their journey.

As the depot made the precarious trip over the railroad tracks, disaster was barely avoided as control was momentarily lost while a worker was making adjustments to the front wheels. He escaped just in time.

The back corner of the depot crashed in to the rail crossing signal and suffered minor damage.

The Depot and Caboose move are another example of teamwork between the town and citizens and local organizations. Town Manager Rodney Dickerson celebrates in the back along with Garner Area Historical Society boardmembers Karen Padgett, Judy Bass, Kaye Whaley, Rebecca Lakey, and Barbra Kennedy.

The Town of Garner owns the land where the new museum and park are now located and contributed to the move and restoration of the depot and caboose. The Garner Area Historical Society will fund and operate the museum.
