The Town of Garner recognized the local Optimist Club with a proclamation at Tuesday night’s Town Council Meeting for their “years of service and commitment to youth basketball and their continued support of the Garner community.”

The Optimist Club ran the youth basketball league for just over 50 years beginning in 1969. The league lives on through the Town of Garner’s Department of Parks and Recreation and Cultural Resources which became the steward of the program beginning this season.

“It certainly is decades of service...it’s been a wonderful program for many years,” said Council member Gra Singleton, noting that both he and his son played basketball in the program.

Rebecca Lakey, membership director of Garner Optimist Club, said she was struck by how special the program was when she first joined two years ago.

She remembers being touched at how appreciative the youth were of the program and how much time and effort it takes to run it.

“We owe a debt of gratitude to all the Optimists, not only for the work in the league as we’ve said, but all the good work you do. Thank you for allowing me and my son to participate in the program many years ago. Well done,” Mayor Ken Marshburn said.

The Optimists plan to continue their support of youth athletics in Garner and are active in both baseball and softball leagues in the town.

“The Garner Optimist Club’s goal, in general, is to support youth,” Lakey said. “We need to find other things for us to help support.”

The community can support the Optimist Club’s programs and youth scholarships at the annual BBQ Fundraiser on February 7, 2020 at 11 a.m.  More information can be found at www.garneroptimistclub.org.

Jackie Johns Sr. Park Dedicated During 4th Annual Smith Drive Park Reunion

It was an afternoon full of love, friends, food, dignitaries, community, and the Lord on Saturday as Rand Mill Road Park was renamed in honor of the late councilmember Jackie Johns Sr., during the 4th Annual Smith Drive Park Reunion.

It was an afternoon full of love, friends, food, dignitaries, community, and the Lord on Saturday as Rand Mill Road Park was renamed in honor of the late councilmember Jackie Johns Sr., during the 4th Annual Smith Drive Park Reunion.

The official renaming was a response by the town council to an outpouring of community support that resulted in a petition with over 1000 signatures. (read more here).

After a welcome by Shelby Smith, Dr. Kevin Sturdivant of Springfield Baptist Church provided the scripture reading and Reverend Tracy J. Bell, Pastor at New Bethel Christian Church, led the assembly in prayer.

Michelle Collins, who spearheaded the effort for the park renaming and became known as the ‘the lady with signatures for Jackie Johns’ recapped the efforts of the community which afforded this momentous day, a mere 8 months after Jackie Johns’ death.

Elected officials from all levels and branches of government were in attendance. Congressman David Price, North Carolina Supreme Court Judge Mike Morgan, Councilmember Kathy Behringer, and Mayor Ronnie Williams provided remarks and remembrances.

Other elected officials in attendance were Wake County Sheriff Gerald Baker, Wake County School Board Member Monika Johnson-Hostler, Councilmember Ken Marshburn, and Councilmember Elmo Vance.

White balloons were released during a moment of silence and remembrance of not only councilmember Johns but any and all loved ones lost.

Capping off the dedication, Mayor Williams and Jackie John Jr. were surrounded by a crowd of phones and cameras eager to capture the moment as the chanted countdown expired, revealing a beautiful sign emblazoned with “Jackie Johns Sr. Community Park”.

The temporary sign was gorgeous and colorful but will eventually be replaced with a permanent carved sign common to other signs at Garner parks.

It was a fittingly beautiful day of remembrance and community.
